Then my after-essentials income is $20k. If I get a raise of $2.5k, then $30k x 2% = $600 goes to cover inflation on essentials, and $1.9k is my increase in disposable income, or about 9.5%. This example happened to line up with the 10% inflation rate for teeth, though the increase in disposable income would vary dramatically by income bracket, cost of living in an area, etc.

   While the savings rate is low, that's more because people blow their money by inflating their spending in line with income, rather than actively save it…

   Did you really need that new F-150 when an 8-year old Honda Civic would have cost $30k less? Not to mention the $10k in gas savings of a smaller car and all that savings then could be invested and earn investment returns.

   Let's face it: most people suck at making financial decisions… but for those of us who don't inflate our lifestyle over time because we aren't fooled into keeping up with the Joneses are saving 50% of our income and are financially independent* after just 15 years of work.

   *Financially independent means our passive investment income exceeds our expenses and we could stop working entirely if we wanted… or feel completely free to work on whatever it is we like without regard to money.

    I know this might sound crazy, but might it be because of our bill denominations over generations? i.e. $1 used to be sufficient, but once there was a tipping point over a certain threshold, parents–ahem!–the tooth fairy were more likely to give $5 bills. This would be because those tooth fairies, as children, received $1 bills and while economically ~$2 would make sense based on inflation, because we don't have a market for teeth, tooth fairies were more likely to just give the next higher bill that's in regular circulation, the $5 bill.
