Marnie you look gorgeous in this video (as always)!! I dont have children yet, but still love to hear peoples perspectives. I was raised in a strict house hold and in a time we didnt have all the distractions of today. My biggest fear is that I dont know how to parent today's children…so really appreciate you sharing what works for your family! 🙂

Great video. As a Mum of two teens it's great hearing your perspective. It's definitely a very challenging time of life and we can only do the best job we can to help our kids through this time. I do parent differently (def. not very hands on but I'm nearly always around) and we've hit a few speed bumps but I'm kinda glad we had them now so we could help direct the course that was being taken. Very soon it will mostly be up to them. You have inspired to me to set rules & consequences once they can drive alone (in a few months) and also for when they leave home for Uni (as we will still be supporting them).

How do their friends address you and Michael? Mrs. Goldberg or Mrs. Marnie? How do you want your boys to address other adults? As a kid we always said Ms./Mr. First Name. Sometimes we used their last name instead but most people preferred their first name. Just wondering what your thoughts are on this subject.

Can you do a video on what is expected for sons as they enter adulthood? I know your eldest has applied and been accepted to quite a few colleges… Was it highly encouraged for him to apply? Would you be upset if they chose to enter the workforce instead (military, trade skills, etc)? Why/ why not? Have you prepped or conditioned them to attain certain educational/professional goals (AP classes, SAT testing, college tours, career discussions)? Love your videos!

I can't even tell you how much I appreciate this video. I agree with everything you say. I would love to hear about what you do to protect the boys technology wise. I'm not very savvy in that area and know I need to be doing more, but am overwhelmed and don't know where to start.

Good job. Having a two parent home is such a gift to your children. My kids feel so lucky that we were able to provide that for them. Keep up the good work. It's not always easy but it's always worth it.

My daughter made the decision to go to an Early College High Schhol ( she will have an Associates Degree when she graduates from HS). She grew up in small town suburbia and is now in the city public school stem. Her high school is actually on a university campus. She has all new friends who are very different than those she grew up with, culturally. I had to make it a priority to get to know as many of her friends parents As I possibly could, as quickly as I could. They do not have many clubs or any sports teams so there are fewer activities to be involved in as apparent. I do make sure I am at PTA meetings, interim report pick up to speak to the teachers every chance that I get and see other parents, if possible. I know it is easy to think they are in high school that involvement is less for parents in school, but I am there every chance I get.

My children didn't get a vote either… good for you!! Rare these days… stay strong. You are the boss… absolutely!! My boys are 36 and my baby is 33 and are both doing very well. I feel we raised them correctly!! Keep it up… awesome!!

1) you two are a beautiful couple. 2) i wish there were more parents out there like you. We have had parents of our daughters friends who wanted to be the friend and not the parent. I took your approach and welcomed the kids over to our home all the time, cooked for them, ordered pizza, etc because i knew in my home they wouldnt be doing anything i didnt approve of.

I have been watching your videos for a while. I have one "tween" and one in 3rd grade but are changing so much and my son is almost a teenager! I've been married 11 years. This video rocks! It comes at the perfect time for me. I am inspired by you & your husband. I have a very similar style of parenting, I don't care if my kids think I'm strict but they must respect us. I like what you said, they will always have many friends but only get one set of parents.

Great video Marnie!! I have two boys (a 4 year old and a 7 month old) and hearing your experiences has given me a glimpse of my future. I know your boys are both heavily involved in football and I think sports in general gives kids such good structure and discipline. It also helps to have them in a more controlled social setting where you can also really get to know their friends and friends' parents. I was just curious how you and Michael balance sports and academics since school athletics take up so much time between practice and games. Is their involvement conditional on how they are doing in school? Also, I'm terrified of football…you hear so much about players suffering head injuries. Is that a worry for you or am I just being a paranoid mom?

Curious, what age can you legally drink alcohol in USA ?. Would you say most Americans are that involved in there teenagers social lives ?. Its probably a good thing, but seem way more involved that in NZ. Though when I was a teenager you could get a learners drivers licence at 15 and sit test to drive your own 6 months later.

It's interesting watching this video as a 20 yr old who wants to have kids in the future but at the same time, it wasn't that long ago that I was a teenager having to tell my mom where I was going. I think my case was a little special though as I was a great kid with a pretty boring social life haha. The roudiest my best friends and I got was going to our high school football games or going to the movies. After a small amount of time realizing this about me, my mom just wanted to know where I was going and when I would be back. My curfew was midnight but if I was going to be out later (late showing of a movie or hanging out at my friend's house), I just had to call or text her.
I think sometimes I think my kids will be just as easy as I was bc of how I was raised but I'm starting to think its down to my personality. I've never been the type who wants to go to parties or skip school. I would much rather be at home on a Saturday night reading a book or watching tv than anything else.

Just curious will Jake have a curfew for prom? I remember thinking that I was the ONLY person in the entire world in 1991 that had a curfew for prom. It was quite the discussion in the Guerra household.

I am a mother who helped in high school. Each child is different and we have to be aware of that. I have two daughters, both in the talented and gifted with Duke University. One went through a difficult time with bullying and needed more help. When I helped her get things done as she would become overwhelmed, other mothers would tell me I was wrong. Now, my daughter is graduating from a private college. She got three internships on her own without help from the university. Has a job after graduation this year with one of the companies she interned for and an offer from another one. She is on three boards of clubs in her degree field. She is graduating with two degrees. She is also in the computer field and excelling. So, in saying this, one can not say that helping and even over helping will cripple a child. It helped mine through a rough patch. She received above average reviews from the computer company she interned for last summer and was named the number one intern at the end

Y'all (yes, I am from Georgia) seem to have a wonderful relationship with each other and your children. My children are older so the teen aged years are behind me. However, no matter their age, you will always worry about them. Parental involvement is crucial. I always tried to keep them involved in positive activities when they were young (less opportunity and time to make bad choices). My mantra was 'raise them to the best of my ability and hope and pray they make wise decisions when mom and dad were not around. Keep up the great work you are doing. Thanks for the video.

I was just spending time with my friend’s two step-daughters, and they really bonded with me in just one day because I actually spent time with them and asked them questions about their life.
I think many parents forget how important just listening and being interested is. All you have to do is make your kids feel like they’re really important and be interested in their lives.

Really impressive to be such great role models & so interactive in the kids' activities. It can't be overstated how vital guidance is and learning to make good decisions. Wisely choosing friends with like values is so important because kids are impressionable and bad influences by others can be catastrophic.

I am watching this on Spring 2018, wonder if you have more videos like this… I just wish… I might keep watching your and stumble upon another video that can make my day like this one. Two days ago I can tell was very difficult for us with our 14 yo who is starting the difficult stage. As I sat down just thinking.. this is just starting… Listening to people we follow talk about what you need to hear is a relief of some kind. Love all the comments here.
