   Interesting. My parents tried to make me bilingual, but from preschool to around 2nd grade is when my second language starting going away, because I consciously made it go away. I just chose to speak English and I can't explain exactly why I didn't want to learn my parent's language anymore.

   I guess it is the lack of confidence in myself, I remember feeling dull urges to hold myself back when they would tell me to repeat a word. I just wouldn't repeat after them. Perhaps my conflict was that it was too embarrassing to be speaking like I was still a toddler, or speaking with my "American accent" which I felt rendered me incapable of speaking the language right/correctly. Just the perfect amount of self-awareness to start rejecting a language lol. Also it was just easier to speak in English when everyone else around me was too. Eventually my parents just gave up trying to teach me, and they spoke in a rough mixture of English with Tagalog (their language) and of course I always replied in English (still do).

   I still cannot speak my parent's language like I would want to. I can understand it and am actually interested in learning more, but I still experience the same feelings. I'm so afraid to speak it because of my accent and basically, reducing myself to baby level and being ridiculed for it. I think you are doing a great job making Joon complete sentences. It must be a little more difficult in Korea if you could do the one language at home/another language outside, but somehow I think that's a very effective way to get kids confident in both.

    This reminds me on how i get exposed to english 😀 even up until today, it's kinda entertaining to see people's reaction whenever i speak english, partly because they never expect a native asian who grows up not in an English speaking country and living with non native English speaking parents and neighborhood could sound like a native english speaker. It's the matter of training the family put on the kid and later on the kid will feel the language is just her natural language that she is comfortable with. I picked up the rule of the grammar when i studied formal English in junior high but even back then i don't think the school curriculum helps me that much in developing my ability in speaking english. They're more like preparing me for the exam not to expert the language..

    I hate when my family blames me for not speaking our mother tongue, Chinese. Most of the time, I only heard Chinese from my mom, but we don't speak to each other that often. My dad travels to China every year for 5-7 months. Even when he comes back to Canada, he's with his friends more than with his family, and goes on his phone a lot. My grandparents speak it too, but I'd only see them 3-5 times a year.
