Communicate with their teachers about everything in a very positive and clear way. Also get involved with the PTO and parents council so that they get to know who you really are. This way any attempts at trying smear you like my ex sociopathic associate principal tries to make, do not work! Go to as many school events as you can.?

I never say anything negative about the other parent especially to teachers. I just say we are divorced and the kids lives with me the majority of the time. The school has a copy of the child custody agreement so they know he is allowed to pick up the kids. The teachers know to make sure notes home go via e-mail as well as their bookbags. He rarely reads or responds to their e-mails because I don't think he cares about their education. He wants his weekends free to do things with the kids and not homework. You're right that teachers need to know that information should go to both parents.
