With the medication thing; its ok to ask "did you take your meds today" if you are that child's parent. What's NOT ok is to do it in a demeaning or rude way/time. If your kid is really angry, that's not an ok time to ask. If the kid is sad, that is not an ok time to ask. If the kid simply forgot and you see they're struggling, THAT is when it is ok to ask.
One thing with ADHD is that we forget a lot of things much easier than others. No, making it a habbit doesn't help. But coming up beside the kid when you see them struggling and reminding them about their needs can help IMMENSELY and will show that you care.
