I was the star player all through high school in field hockey and soccer and we didn't really get medals in the 80s and 90s. I think I got one tiny one, that the whole team got when my junior league soccer team took first place. Participation medals are a joke!

They are setting him up for failure by expecting him not to fail.

Believe it or not there is a right and a wrong way to raise a child. Not allowing a child to cry and telling him he's a "crybaby" if he does is wrong, plain and simple. It is developmentally appropriate to cry at that age, in fact, crying to receive sadness, stress, and frustration is appropriate at all ages and it's actually good for you. Please, before you adopt a parenting style that is considered by others to be "extreme" read the research on it.

Once we got to college he pretty much completely broke ties with them and doesn't plan on reconciling with them.

I hope these parents are not surpised someday if they wake up and realize they just survived a murder attempt. But then maybe the child will be successful. If there were some accident and the child died tomorrow, would they regret never having let him be happy? Children are not small adults – they are beings unto themselves and exist in the here and now. They deserve happiness and respect now.
